I don't particularly understand it either; to me, the Cell Arc was where this series fell off a cliff. I know that "Toriyama wanted to end it at Freeza" is a myth, but it certainly seems that way. Why do I think that? Because the Freeza and saiyan Arcs, were linked by cause and effect, while the Cell Arc was basically an asspull from the very start. -Dr. Gero never existed until DBZ. He's an asspull. -There were countless ways that Goku and co. could have stopped Gero from building Androids ("Hey Shenron, make it so Gero never builds any more robots."), but instead they took the riskiest, most straightfoward, dumbf*** route and showed up at East City, not before, but exactly when the Androids arrived. -Goku's heart virus was a complete waste of time with no payoff. It's ridiculous that he wouldn't have taken the medicine too. -Future Trunks, while I like his character, and I like his relationship with Vegeta, really didn't have a place in this arc. I felt like Toriyama didn't give us enough to make us care about his future timeline, nor did it really have any kind of effect on the plot either. All he did was make everyone look like a dumbass, see my second bullet point. It would have been better if the Androids showed up suddenly and simply put everyone on the defensive. -Toriyama's editor caused a lot of problems. Switching out the villain three times really did turn out to be a mistake. Once Cell showed up and took over the plot, it was fine, but the sections with #17 - #20 all seemed like they led to nothing in particular, like they were a waste of time, and that's the fault of Toriyama's editor for forcing him to change the story massively based on something so shallow as not liking the designs for #19 and #20. -The Cell Games. I felt they were a worthless contrivance of the highest order. It's pretty clear Toriyama just ran into an unresolvable situation and came up with some nonsense so we can have our climactic battle. He had to fall back on Cell's motivation being that old "I wanna fight strong guys" fallback, though Cell is not the worst offender on this front. That title goes to Super Boo. |

- It came out of nowhere, in that it would have been impossible to guess, but it's certainly believable. Just like Raditz revealing Goku is from another planet. It's not the same kind of ridiculousness as an incredibly strong enemy, that no one could do any damage to at all, losing to a single punch to the stomach. - Yes, you're right in that stupidity prevailed. It's hardly new to this part of the series, though. - Couldn't he only take the medicine once he got the symptoms? Then, didn't he assume that history must have changed because it was the day of the androids and he hadn't become sick? It's fair to conclude he would have been ill before the androids arrive, since he was told that that is the reason he wasn't around in the future, and not because the androids killed him. That aside, I see it as part of the reason Trunks needed to go in to the past. If Trunks had only come to tell him to train for a future enemy—which we know Goku does regardless—then he's basically come back to tell him to do what he was already doing. With the heart virus there is a legitimate reason for Trunks to do so. Plus, Toriyama seems to like having Goku out of action so that he may play with the other characters for a while. - You could argue that the whole future thing didn't need to happen full stop, and that's fine, but I thought it was quite interesting. Not only was someone else suddenly a Super Saiyan, but it wasn't even a Saiyan we'd ever seen before, who just suddenly shows up and disposes of Freeza in a moment. It was really thrilling from my younger self's perspective, and I know it excited a lot of other people, too. - I'd say it all worked out just fine. - You're right to complain, it's not great writing. But then, none of Dragon Ball Z is. There was plenty of stupidity involved in Freeza getting closer to his maximum power, and Goku surviving long enough to become a Super Saiyan. Namek-Frieza saga/arc was boring af. Watching Gohan and Krillin run around and get beat up by the Ginyu force? GTSHOOH. Frieza plays way too much too. What could have saved it was more Z fighters such as Tien and Yamcha. The character diversity and quantity would have made the arc more interesting. Android/Cell arc was really the true emergence of DBZ for reasons much of us already know. Edited by OmegaMagnusDA, Aug 19 2015, 07:03 PM.

It was the only saga where everyones favourite Z fighters were all together (Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Tien and Yamcha). It's also the only saga with fan-favourite Future Trunks. Cell Game Gohan is also arguably the most popular version of Gohan. The Freeza saga is limited to basically just Gohan, Krillin and Vegeta for most of it, with Piccolo and Goku coming in later. The Boo saga is less popular since it introduces Goten and Trunks, and removes Future Trunks, Tien, Krillin, Yamcha and Piccolo from the fighters. It also changed Krillin's most iconic look. The Saiyan saga is probably the second best for "group shots", but it still lacks future Trunks, you can't have the iconic "4 Super Saiyans and Piccolo" images, kid Gohan isn't very popular, and Vegeta can't be included in the Z cast. And while this is more subjective, I find everyone looks their best in the Cell arc. |
